Paul Cohen, LCSW — Contributor

Paul Cohen is a licensed clinical social worker in private practice in Queens, NY.  He received his MSW degree from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University in New York City.  He provides psychotherapy for individuals, couples, families and groups - utilizing cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic and humanistic therapy modes.

Before starting his private practice, Paul had an extensive background as a psychiatric social worker and case manager  for social service agencies and learned to be a strong advocate for his clients.  These clients have included:  chronically mentally ill adults, the physically disabled and at-risk elderly, MICA (mentally ill-chemical abuser) patients,  and the “worried well”.  As a case manager for the Jewish Association of Services for the Aged-Protective Services for Adults (JASA-PSA), he provided concrete and involuntary services for elderly clients under a NYC-contracted non-sectarian program.  These services included: certifying benefits, coordinating psychiatric evaluations, implementing homecare and financial management, counseling clients and their families on issues concerning chronic and terminal illness, and serving as a liaison with government and private agencies.   Paul's other positions have included coordinating therapy groups for a continuing day treatment program and serving as a director of after-care services at an adult home.

Paul has always had a special affection and rapport with the elderly, having been very close to his grandparents, who helped raise him.   As an adoptive parent of a 7-year-old girl, he also has special interests in adoption and infertility counseling, attachment issues, and family therapy.  He is a  certified Beyond Consequences Institute (BCI) instructor.  (The BCI model is a love-based approach to handling children with severe behaviors.)  Other special interests include bereavement therapy, trauma, life transitions, spirituality and therapy, and “sandwich generation” issues.

Paul's professional organizational memberships and affiliations include:  the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), American Fertility Association (AFA), ATTACh (Association for Treatment and Training in the Attachment of Children) and Give an Hour (a network of therapists providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families).

Paul takes a primarily non-pathology view of psychotherapy and tries to honor each individual's unique characteristics and strengths.  As a therapist whose clients have spanned all age groups - including seniors in their 80's and 90's - two of his guiding principles are to “go where the client is” and that it is “never too late to change”.  You can learn more about Paul and his practice at .
