In the private sector, Dr. Zupanick's clinical practice began in 1988 as a certified drug treatment counselor and later as the Director of Drug and Alcohol Programs in a rural community mental health system. She later served as the CEO of a private addictions treatment facility combining her backgrounds in both business and psychology. She has been committed to working with under-served populations particularly rural communities and persons with severe and persistent, psychiatric conditions (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and severe PTSD). Her clinical interests have also included drug and alcohol treatment (including opiate agonist treatments), eating disorders, personality disorders, human sexuality, recovery from trauma such as sexual assault and sexual abuse, and spirituality.

Dr. Zupanick's most recent interests included leading and supervising mobile treatment teams using an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) approach with rural populations, as well as managing a Psychiatric Recovery Center, based upon the contemporary “recovery” model of psychiatric rehabilitation. She is a strong and devoted advocate for family members of the mentally ill. Dr. Zupanick is a member of the United States Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association, the VA Psychology Leaders Association, and is registered with The National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. Dr. Zupanick continues to provide consulting and grant-writing services to mental health service delivery systems; particularly those systems that are attempting to transition to these newer models of recovery from severe psychiatric illness.
