Every therapist on the Amwell platform has a professional license and a master’s or doctoral degree. The platform also has board-certified psychiatrists available to prescribe medications. All providers receive training on how to deliver treatment via telehealth services before they can interact with patients.

The type of treatment you receive depends on your needs and the therapist’s experience. All providers use evidence-based practices, so your therapist may offer the following online therapy services:

Amwell therapists have extensive experience treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, insomnia and panic attacks. A therapist can also provide guidance as you make major life transitions or cope with grief due to the loss of a loved one. Some Amwell therapists also have experience providing online counseling services to members of the LGBTQ+ community.

To schedule your first appointment, click the “Sign Up” button on the Amwell home page. When you enter your insurance information, Amwell will search for an online therapy service that’s covered under your insurance benefits. For example, if you have Capital BlueCross, you’ll be prompted to schedule an appointment with Capital BlueCross Virtual Care. If you don’t have insurance or your insurance isn’t listed in the dropdown menu, you’ll be able to schedule an appointment directly with Amwell.

From your member homepage, click the arrow under the Behavioral Health category to schedule an appointment with a therapist or psychiatrist. Amwell only displays mental health professionals who are licensed to practice in your state. Each professional has a short bio that tells you about their educational credentials, areas of expertise, and approach to mental healthcare.

Amwell only offers video therapy sessions. If you get disconnected due to an internet issue, your therapist may contact you by phone to finish your discussion.

How Long Are the Sessions?

Each Amwell therapy session typically lasts for 45 minutes. For online psychiatry services, you’ll have an initial consultation that also lasts for approximately 45 minutes. 

Once you have an Amwell account, all you have to do is visit your dashboard and click the arrow under the Behavioral Health heading to open the appointment scheduler. You’ll be able to browse through provider profiles or schedule an appointment with the first available therapist.

Many Amwell therapists offer couples therapy to help romantic partners work through their relationship issues and learn how to improve their coping skills. There are currently no larger group therapy sessions available.

Amwell doesn’t have any monthly membership fees, so you pay for each appointment at the time of service. If you want to work with a virtual therapist, the cost is $109 per session for a therapist with a master’s degree and $129 per session for a therapist with a doctoral degree. For users who want to see a psychiatrist, the initial assessment costs $279. Follow-up appointments cost $109 each.

Since Amwell doesn’t offer monthly subscriptions, there’s nothing to cancel. If you want to stop using the platform, all you have to do is stop scheduling appointments. Amwell doesn’t offer refunds on completed appointments.

Amwell works with a wide range of insurance plans throughout the United States. The online therapy services offered by Amwell are also covered by some Medicaid managed care plans. These plans are part of the Medicaid program, but they’re managed by private health insurance companies.

Amwell doesn’t offer financial aid for its therapy or psychiatry services.

Amwell is unique because its virtual counseling services are part of an online telehealth platform that also offers psychiatry services. Providers in some states speak Spanish, making it easier for Spanish-speaking users to access mental health care. Amwell also works with a wide range of health insurance plans.

Amwell provides customer support via telephone and email. It also has a separate phone number for users who prefer to schedule their appointments on the phone instead of online.
