Yes. Studies comparing women of various cultures provide evidence that lifestyle makes a difference in the way a woman’s body adjusts to menopause. For example, Japanese women whose diet is packed with plant-derived estrogens (particularly in soybeans), have very little menopausal discomfort. Similar studies in the U.S. have found that women whose diets are high in fat have a more difficult time with menopause. Many times our diets are decided for us. Women in the higher socio-economic classes tend to practice healthier eating styles. Much of the reading suggests that the severity of menopausal symptoms are the greatest predictor of a woman’s reaction to menopause. If this is the case, then women from lower socio-economic backgrounds will have a harder time adjusting to menopause, both physically as well as mentally. Women within the lower income brackets are also less likely/capable of seeking medical treatment. As for the woman’s mental condition, it depends on the individual. Does she have many support systems? If the woman has many friends, family, and a caring/understanding significant other, then she should have less difficulty during this time in her life.
