My Ten New Year Resolutions

Once again, I will begin the New Year with a set of resolutions I will work hard to achieve. They are not my only goals but seem especially important to me now, at this time. I hope this will get all of you to think of the goals you want to achieve or, at least, work towards, during the coming year:

Ten Resolutions:

1. Instead of working towards perfection, that I know I cannot achieve, I will strive to do the best I can as a father, husband, writer for Mental Help Net and a psychotherapist.

2. When I begin to sense I might be feeling angry I will pause and think carefully about whether I want to respond and about how I want to respond to whomever I think is making me angry. That pause and careful thought will help me respond with wisdom instead of ire.

3. I will be a more patient person, understanding that others cannot be perfect, just as I cannot be perfect.

4. I will work hard to be accepting of the opinions and points of view of others with whom I may disagree. I will remind myself that I do not need to convince them of the “wrongness” of their views or the “rightness of mine.” Instead, I will strive to accept differing opinions in a way that is tolerant and respectful.

5. As I have in the past, I will continue to strive towards understanding, respecting and accepting others who are religiously, racially, ethnically and cognitively different from me.

6. I will strive to teach young and aspiring psychotherapists from all fields to learn how to think and act professionally without imposing my personal values on them.

7. I will move away from being a work-a-holic and give myself and my family leisure time for enjoying the outdoors, music and theater.

8. I will work towards saving wild life on our planet in the small ways that I can and hope that with all of us making our small contributions we can collectively save our planet.

9. I will use my cognitive behavioral skills to ward of or reduce my feelings of depression and anxiety when they may intrude themselves into my life.

10. I will let all those I have the privilege of knowing how I value and appreciate their being in my life.

In striving towards your resolutions please remember, it is not being perfect or achieving them that is important but it is making the effort to do the best you can.

Have a Happy and Healthy New Year.
